Children from all over New Orleans will be able to participate in the first ever PNOLA Kids’ Fair on Saturday, May 16 from 10am to 2pm. The event, hosted by the Phoenix of New Orleans (PNOLA), will take place at the Sojourner Truth Community Center at the intersection of Lafitte Avenue and North Galvez Street.
The fair's activities will include a petting zoo featuring farm animals from the LSU Agricultural center, mural and face painting, planting flowers and vegetables, a drum circle from the Ashe Cultural Center, and storytelling by Adella Adella the Storyteller. Additionally, children will enjoy live entertainment from the We Are One Brass Band and be able to take home free gardening seeds, books, and great raffle prizes.
“I have been planning the Kids' Fair the past four months, and it's really exciting that the date is finally near,” shared event coordinator Allison Hahn. “We have a lot of fantastic groups contributing, and because of the number of food donations we have received, kids will be able to enjoy free lunch. I hope that families from Mid-City and all surrounding neighborhoods will join us!”
The goal of the fair is to provide an engaging and educational afternoon for the children of New Orleans. Organizations like the YMCA of Greater New Orleans, YA/YA, and Hands On New Orleans will be coordinating interactive activities ranging from soccer drills to a cupcakewalk.
Furthermore, a resource guide will be distributed to parents in order to provide valuable information about local programs for children of all ages.
“It’s wonderful to see an event like the Kids' Fair in our community,” noted Niko Booth of Hands On. “Hopefully more organizations and individuals will take similar initiatives in the future to engage youth in fun and creative ways.”
