PNOLA's Staff Participates in Gert Town Neighborhood Clean-Up

NEW ORLEANS, LA: February 11, 2009

It was an early Saturday morning for the Phoenix of New Orleans fundraising team as they arrived at Greater King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church for a 7:45 am neighborhood clean-up initiative. Brittany Clark, Lashon Daley, and Jennifer Fisher rode their bikes from Uptown to Gert Town to collect trash alongside students from the University of New Orleans, Gert Town residents, and Councilwoman Stacy Head.

“I really enjoyed working with everyone,” said Fisher, PNOLA’s Donations Manager. “Not only were they extremely committed to bringing about change in the neighborhood, they were genuinely happy to be there.”

Organized by community leader Denise Graves of People Improving Communities through Organizing (PICO), the clean-up sparked a fire in some neighborhood members, motivating them to get involved.

“I loved when these three neighborhood children walked out of their homes that morning and began helping us pick up the trash,” said Clark, PNOLA’s Program Development Manager. “It was inspirational.”

It was also inspirational to see Councilwoman Stacy Head, her Senior Policy Adviser Ann Redd, and her personal assistant Greg Malveaux doing their part.

“I had the chance to talk with them while working beside them. It was great seeing their enthusiasm about getting this neighborhood back in shape,” said Daley, PNOLA’s PR Manager.
