Meet the Ramp Up Homeowners
Lilly Jones
Neighborhood: Central City
Central City sustained between 4-7 ft. of water from Hurricane Katrina, and has been slower to recover because of the typically low socio-economic status of the neighborhood.
Lilly Jones was forced to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina destroyed her home in the Hoffman Triangle neighborhood of Central City New Orleans. With the money she received from insurance and the Road Home program, Lilly was able to hire contractors to do the rebuilding work. Unfortunately, as is too often the case, the contractors on the job used all the money and did incomplete or improper work, living her house livable, but not entirely functional.Just recently she had a knee surgery which has severely limited her mobility in her advanced age, requiring that she use an accessibility ramp to get into and out of her home. She currently has a ramp in place, but it was shoddily built and inadequate for her needs requiring that we demolish and replace it. With little funding left she has turned to PNOLA for help in constructing a ramp for her so that she may regain her independence.
Lena and Myra Boudreaux
Neighborhood: Broadmoor
Broadmoor sustained between 4-6 ft. of water from Hurricane Katrina, and has for the most part progressed well in the recovery effort because of a strong neighborhood association.
Myra owns a home in Broadmoor which took on water during Hurricane Katrina and had to be rebuilt. Myra has since moved her elderly and disabled mother Lena in with her so that she can take care of her. In order for Myra to help Lena get into and out of the house, she requires the use of a wheelchair ramp. In addition to the construction of an accessibility ramp, we will be caulking and painting her house to protect it from the elements and ensure that it is energy efficient and as green as possible.
